File Cabinet Locks and Keys

Seattle Locksmith repairs, rekeys, and replaces file cabinet locks.

Most commonly file cabinets are made out of wood or sheet metal, and aren’t usually considered to be the safest and most secure way of storing information. They do, however, still usually come equipped with some sort of locking mechanism. On most filing cabinets a “thumblatch”, a small metal sliding device, must be pressed in order to open the drawer, and similarly there is an “outstop” which prevents the drawer from falling out should you pull it to hard or too far.

Your filing cabinet likely has one of two locks. The first, and most common, is a “cam lock” which usually resembles a mailbox lock. It is used with a key which turns the lock to both open and close the cabinet. The second type of lock is what is called a “plunger lock”. This too is opened with a key; however it can quickly and easily be closed and locked by pressing the body of the lock (much like the knob on some residential bathroom or bedroom doors). These types of locks are usually installed on fire proof file cabinets.

Seattle Locksmith technicians are fully equipped to install, repair or rekey any of your file cabinets. We are also able to unlock any type of filing cabinet lock if your key has been lost, stolen, or broken and can provide you with a replacement key and as many duplicates as you require.
